Calories (or energy)

The number of calories in any given food depends on the amount of energy the food provides.

The number of calories a person needs depends on age, height, weight, gender, and activity level.

To keep to a healthy weight, the energy provided by your food and drink must be in balance with the energy you use. If you take in more calories per day than your body needs, you will gain weight; fewer calories and you will lose weight.
